SKATEBOARDING IS NOT A CRIME

LETS SKATE F#@K THE HATERS

During the weekend I watched the movie 'Street Dreams' starring P-Rod, in the movie I was disturbed by one thing: Police and their hate on skateboarders. That is just absurd, I mean skaters are just peaceful, we see a spot with an awesome rail or ledge and we skate it that's all. We don't kill anyone, we don't ruin any property( except for the paint we scrape of the rail when we grind), we don't do crime and it is so amazing how police go after skateboarders instead of going against criminals. Maybe it is because they want to show us they can arrest people or maybe they want to redeem themselves. I am not against police, I am just against people who abuse their power. WE ARE SKATEBOARDERS AND WE WILL NEVER STOP THRASHING.

TOP 10 SKATEBOARDING MOVIES

Skateboarding is not just a sport as you are told, its a way of life, a dream, reality and the air that we breathe. Once you get on that board you addicted, you eat skateboarding, drink it, wear it and just live the whole phenomemon. Now its your turn to just take a backseat and watch the whole thing, the top 10 skate movies of all time, this is what determines the history of skatebording.

10. Wassup Rockers / Kids / Ken Park

Wassup Rockers / Kids / Ken ParkWassup Rockers / Kids / Ken Park
In 1995, director Larry Clark made a movie called Kids. Kids tells the story of several skater teens in New York who freely experiment with drugs and sex, and shows a gritty portrayal of what that can do. In 2002 Larry Clark came out with Ken Park, a movie that tells the story of a group of skaters dealing with the suicide of one of their friends. Clark came out with Wassup Rockers in 2005, and tells the story of a group of Guatemalan American and Salvadoran American teens in Los Angeles who get into skate punk culture instead of gangs. The boys get harassed for this, and the movie's story comes out of this conflict. I list all of these together because they feel like a set - all telling gritty teenage skater stories.

9. Dogtown and Z-Boys

Dogtown and Z-BoysDogtown and Z-Boys
Dogtown and Z-Boys is a documentary about the same story as the Lords of Dogtown theatrical movie. However, as a documentary, it tells a more objective and complete tale, though maybe not as moving of one! From the review - "Dogtown and Z-Boys is a documentary that walks viewers through the history and lives of the legendary Zephyr surf and skateboarding team. The film, directed by the famous Z-Boy Stacey Peralta and narrated by Sean Penn, is full of vintage surf and skate video footage, photos, and interviews with the Zephyr team."

8. Stoked: The Rise and Fall of Gator

Stoked: The Rise and Fall of GatorStoked: The Rise and Fall of Gator
Stoked came out in 2002, and is the most dark and serious movie in this list. It documents the true story of the life of Mark "Gator" Rogowski, how he rose to fame and riches in the 80's, but then how his life fell apart. The movie shows drugs and alcohol ripping Gator's life apart, and how he eventually gets sentenced for rape and murder. Not quite the "group of teens trying to go pro" storyline! Stoked is a very dark movie, but one of the best on this list. Stoked features interviews with people like Tony Hawk, Jason Jessee, Stacy Peralta, Lance Mountain, and Steve Caballero. The movie also includes popular music from the time and culture, like the Butthole Surfers, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag and Naked Raygun.

7. Deck Dogz

Deck DogzDeck Dogz
Deck Dogz is an Australian skateboarder movie that came out in 2005. Deck Dogz features guest star Tony Hawk, and stars Sean Kennedy, Ho Thi Lu and Richard Wilson. Deck Dogz is about 3 teenage skaters who are having problems with school, their parents, some criminals and the authorities. The movie follows these skaters on their journey through Australia. Their dream is get to Beachbowl, a competition hosted by Tony Hawk (playing himself), and to get Hawk to sponsor them as pro skaters.

6. Paranoid Park

Paranoid ParkParanoid Park
Paranoid Park is a dramatic movie that came out in 2007. It tells the story of a teenage skater who uses his skateboard to fight off a security guard, only to have the guard accidentaly die. The rest of the film is about Alex, the skater, hiding and trying to figure out how to deal with what's happened. The movie was filmed in Portland, Oregon, and uses the famous Burnside skatepark as the Paranoid Park in the film. The movie revolves around skateboarding and skaters, but uses it more to set up the culture that Alex is part of. Paranoid Park was very well received with critics, but in my opinion is a little slow! Still, it's a serious drama involving skateboarding, that doesn't tell the story of a group of kids trying to go pro!

5. Grind

GrindGrind
Grind is an American skateboarding movie that came out in 2003. It's more of an adventure comedy, and follows a group of skaters who... get this... want to become pros! This has been basically the storyline for anything to do with skateboarding for decades... Grind got terrible reception when it came out, but now has actually developed quite a popularity with the same crowd that watched shows like Jackass. The film features Bob Burnquist , Bucky Lasek, Pierre Luc Gagnon and Bam Margera, along with Preston Lacy, Ehren Danger McGhehey and Jason Wee Man AcuƱa of Jackass fame.

4. The Search for Animal Chin

The Search for Animal ChinThe Search for Animal Chin
The Search for Animal Chin came out in 1987, and was by far the best skateboarding video to come out anywhere near that time. It featured the famous "Bones Brigade" skate team, and it was one of the very first skateboarding videos to have a plot! The movie starts with Animal Chin, the 62 year old master of skateboarding, going missing. The Bones Brigade (Steve Caballero, Tommy Guerrero, Tony Hawk, Mike McGill and Lance Mountain) go on a search for him. The story is simple and fun, and it's obvious that the team had a lot of fun making it. The video is a must see for anyone who cares about skating - it's different from the skate videos of today, more low, simple, and fun.

3. Gleaming the Cube

Gleaming the CubeGleaming the Cube
Gleaming the Cube came out back in 1989. It stars a young Christian Slater as Brian Kelly, a 16 year old skater. Kelly is a skater who only wants to skate until his adopted Vietnamiese brother mysteriously dies, and Kelly must grow up quickly to uncover the truth of his brother's murder. The movie is packed with famous skaters. Tony Hawk, and Tommy Guerrero play friends of Kelly, and skate around with him (at the time, Hawk and Guerrero were in the Bones Brigade). Original Z-Boy Stacy Peralta was the skateboarding technical advisor, and the movie's stunt men include Mike McGill, "Gator" Mark Rogowski, Rodney Mullen, Rich Dunlop, Eric Dressen, Lance Mountain, Mike Vallely, Chris Black, Ted Ehr, Natas Kaupas, Chris Borst, and Steve Saiz.

2. Lords of Dogtown

Lords of DogtownLords of Dogtown
This is easily the best skateboarding movie made so far. It's exciting, packed with drama and emotion, and tells an honest-to-goodness true story. Lords of Dogtown is set in Santa Monica in the early 1970s, and focuses on three surfers named Tony Alva (played by Victor Rasuk), Stacy Peralta (played by John Robinson), and Jay Adams (played by Emile Hirsch). They enjoy surfing and skateboarding, and hanging out at the Zephyr Skate Shop. A set of new polyeutethane skate wheels transforms what skateboarding can look like, and the three go on to become famous in skateboarding contests, with the wealth and fame then tearing them apart. It's a great true story and helps show the history and evolution of skateboarding .      1. Thrashin'
Thrashin'Thrashin'
Thrashin' came out in 1986, and is a dramatic movie about skaters and their lives. The story follows young skater Cory Webster is an amateur skater who wants to win a big downhill skating competition. He falls in love with a girl named Chrissy, who's big brother is the leader of a mean skater/punk rock band called "The Daggers." Thrashin' stars Josh Brolin, Robert Rusler, and Pamela Gidley. It also has a lot of big name skaters from the 80's, like Tony Alva, Tony Hawk, Christian Hosoi and Steve Caballero. The movie originally even had Johnny Depp in it, but the producer axed him. It's also sometimes called "Skate Gang."

TRANSGENDER SKATER MAKES WAVES

IS THE SKATE COMMUNITY WILLING TO EMBRACE A TRANSGENDER SKATER?

HillaryThompson-FrontsideNoseSlide-Raleigh1
You may have been hearing more and more about the LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender) community, and the effort to create a more tolerant and accepting community. It wasn’t too long ago that Tom Gabel from the band Against Me! announced that he was, in fact, a woman. The response from the punk and greater music community was mixed, with some people being supportive of the courage it took, while others were critical or simply angry. Well, now there is an openly transgender member of the skateboarding community. Skateboarding has always been quite progressive and open-minded, and it will be interesting to see how this news will be received.
Hillary Thompson was born on the 10th of September in Raleigh, North Carolina. She started skateboarding at about 4 or 5 years old on a single kicktail with big plastic wheels. Around the age of 4 or 5 is also when the imposing societal ideas of sex, gender and sexuality became a reality in her life. While your sex is defined by your anatomy when you’re born, gender is a construct, and is generally given to the corresponding sex i.e. “girl” to female, and “boy” to male. The problem with this is that some people born male may not feel “male”. Hillary always just expected that she would grow up and become a woman. She was given a male gender when she was born though, and was therefore in conflict with her internal gender identity. This is called ‘gender disphoria’; an anxiety created by the conflict between a person’s assigned gender and their internal gender. This can be very difficult for that individual, as exhibiting female characteristics when you have been given a male gender can result in a lot of hatred, aggression, and possibly even violence from society.
Hillary-Thompson-OllieUpToCrookedGrind-Raleigh1
She ignored it for a while, but it became difficult to simply run away from the issue, and at around 18 she knew that she had to do something about it. Her parents sent her to a psychiatrist, as she started battling with depression and began isolating herself. The psychiatrist basically just gave her a prescription though, which obviously didn’t help anything. So she decided to do some research on the internet, ordered female hormones, and read up on how to transition. Her family and friends love and support her.
Finally Hillary was able to go to a therapist specialising in gender and gender issues, and be able to speak about what she was going through. Because the therapist wasn’t trying to ‘fix’ her, she could begin a constructive transitioning process and become who she always wanted to be. Often when people transition between genders, they feel like they have to forget all the habits from the pervious gender, but because Hillary skated, she could ignore all of that and just carry on skateboarding. At first she didn’t skate much with other people because she didn’t think that people would accept it, but the support and acceptance she has received from the skateboarding community has been mostly positive.
HillaryThompson-5050UP-Raleigh1
Today, Hillary is moving forward and living a happy, healthy life, learning to creating accepting relationships with herself, and he family and friends. Talking about skateboarding, she says “Well I like it more now than I ever have, because before there were always boundaries I wouldn’t cross because I was living in fear. There was the transitional period when I just skated by myself, which I didn’t like because for me skating is a really social thing. Skating alone is really depressing. Now I have friends to skate with and I’ve lost those barriers and boundaries. I can be myself.” She skates pretty much every day.
This will probably be a new thing for many members of the skateboarding community to think about, and we are interested to hear what your opinions are. Feel free to comment below, but please be respectful of other’s opinions.

NYJAH streetleague win

NYJAH DEFENDS STREETLEAGUE TITLE

Nyjah Huston won his second consecutive X Games gold medal on Saturday in the STREETLEAGUE final, winning on every section of the three-part course. Paul "P-Rod" Rodriguez, the gold medalist at X Games Los Angeles 2012, took silver, followed by newcomer Manny Santiago in third.
"I was so nervous. I've never felt that much pressure," said Huston, the 2012 Street League champion. "I've never felt a feeling like that before ... Congrats to Paul. He gave me such an amazing battle and made me work for that so hard."
After brief rain delays on the course, Huston charged on his first of two attempts in the Flow section with a run that included a massive backside 180 nosegrind on the Hubba ledge. He then won the Control section with a 9.1 for a technical kickflip to frontside hurricane grind, extending his lead in Street League's elite "9" club as the skater with the most scores of 9.0 or higher.
"Everyone out there is killing it so hard and the progression is going at such a high level," Huston said. The win gives Huston his sixth X Games medal, a haul that includes last month's Street gold in Foz do IguaƧu, Brazil, a win at X Games Los Angeles 2011 and the Real Street video contest gold from 2012. This also makes Huston undefeated in Street League competition in the first year of Street League's new partnership with X Games.
"Each and every contest it gets gnarlier and gnarlier," Huston said. "You really have to give it your all."

XGAMES

X GAMES PRODUCDE FIRST WINNER IN THE VERT CONTEST

BARCELONA, Spain -- The expanded global X Games series has been golden so far for Bucky Lasek, who won Skateboard Vert gold on the opening day of X Games Barcelona, just one month after grabbing gold in Brazil at X Games Foz do IguaƧu.
"I can't believe I just won," Lasek said Thursday. Brazilian skater Marcelo Bastos won the lip trick section of the three-part contest with a frontside Cab 5-0 grind to revert and 16-year-old Mitchie Brusco won the best trick section with a 900, the first he's ever landed on a traditional vert ramp after mastering them on the MegaRamp. But Lasek dominated the full run section, worth 50 percent of the overall score, proving that all-around skills and decades of experience still rule.
Lasek, 40, is the oldest skateboarder competing at X Games this week and now has a total of eight gold medals in his collection, six of them in Skateboard Vert; that ties him with Pierre-Luc Gagnon for the most Skateboard Vert medals in the 20-year history of X Games. Lasek has mentored both Bastos and Brusco for years.
"You know, sometimes you just feel it and I definitely felt it," Brusco said after landing both his 900 and a 360 varial 540 in the best trick competition. He learned both tricks from watching Tony Hawk, another of his mentors. "I mean, you learn from the best right? He's done a lot of damage with those tricks so I thought I'd learn them."
Lasek doesn't have a lot of time to rest after his win: He's shifting gears to compete with Team Subaru in the X Games Ford Rallycross event on Sunday.
"I'm going to have my hands full," he said, acknowledging the tough field of competitors. "But our Subarus are strong and we are going to represent."

HOW TO SKATEBOARD: TIP 2 THE OLLIE

  • Once youhave gotten the grip on riding your skateboard, you have to elevate and try tricks.
  • The ollie is basically a jump trick, you can do it to jump over obsticles when ridng on the street or on the sidewalk.
  • First step: your front foot should be just behind the front bolts, it is best to push back a little and stand with your toes, your backfoot must be exactly on the tail of your board.
  • Second step: kick/push the tail down as hard as you can and jump as high as you can, this happens in a split second, and keep your eyes on the board. The board will pop ( gain air)
  • Third step: when in the air, you swipe your front foot up on the nose of your board, with the side of the foot, this will make sure you have control of your skateboard and you will bring it down and ride away.

BOARD REVIEW

CLICHE CARBON LIGHT SKATEBOARD

TYPE: carbon fibre light
WOOD: Canadian maple
Size: 7.8" & 31.8"

The board is made for tricks for sure, because it is light yet the make of the maple wood and the fibre make it the longest lasting skateboards of all time, i totally think thats the best feature of the board. Since it is so hard to break apart I recommend this board for those hardcore skaters who are eager to skate everything. Another feature i really like is the 'pop' in it, it pops so easily and higher, so beginners should enjoy it like that. I have personal experience about this baby, its not only good but its just what every skateboarder needs in their best pet.

Rating: 5 out of 5

HOW TO SKATEBOARD: TIP 1

  • How to ride
Firstly, you need to figure out what foot is your best foot. The foot that you use to get on the stairs first is the foot you are going to use as your front foot, if that foot is your right, you skate 'Goofy', if it is your left, you skate 'Regular'. Now, to ride, with your two feet on the skateboard in position (your front foot behind the front bolts and your back foot on the back bolts), you move the board foward with your front foot(kicking) and then padle from the ground with your back foot (pushing). Do it slowly until you feel comfortable enough to go with speed.

X GAMES  PARTNERS WITH STREETLEAGUE

The highest levels of competitive skateboarding entered a new era today with the announcement that Rob Dyrdek's Street League Skateboarding will partner with the X Games Men's Skateboard Street competition this year, as the action sports event expands globally.
With the partnership, Street League's annual contest series will now include stops at this year's X Games events in Brazil, Spain, Germany and Los Angeles. With those newly branded "Street League at X Games" additions, the 2013 Street League World Tour, as it's called, will feature six stops, plus a season-ending championship event.
"There is no better opportunity to elevate Street League globally than our new partnership with the X Games," Dyrdek said in a statement. "By launching a fully connected world tour, our pros now have six events to qualify into the championship, with each tour stop utilizing the standard Street League format, course design, and prize money that has helped establish the series as the most elite tour in skateboarding. This partnership not only gives more to our fans but also adds undeniable media support from ESPN to give the league a true global impact."
The agreement essentially replaces X Games Men's Skateboard Street contests with Street League events, ensuring that the league's 20 contracted pros are automatically invited to compete at the four new stops. But fans can also anticipate a showing of non-Street League skaters.
Dubbed the Street League Skateboarding (SLS) Select Series, the league's first-ever qualifier will pit 10 cherry-picked pro skaters and five local skaters from each X Games host city on the contest course for a chance to ride in the Street League at X Games medal event.
"We are working to establish a qualifying structure into the Select Series utilizing other established competitions outside of Street League," said Street League general manager Brian Atlas. "For the first year, though, we are taking all factors into consideration, including performance in prior contests as well as traditional video and magazine coverage."
The list of confirmed Select Series riders who will compete at the first stop, in Brazil, will be announced soon, Atlas said.
"The X Games and Street League collaboration will allow ESPN to provide continuity throughout the skate competition season and showcase the world's best street skaters to all of the X Games events globally," Tim Reed, ESPN's senior director of content strategy, said in the statement. "In addition, ESPN is thrilled to be the exclusive live platform for the Street League world tour and looking forward to documenting all of the stories and highlights year round on xgames.com."
The partnership also includes a broadcast deal with ESPN and ESPN2, which has been televising the Street League series since its inception in 2010.
The 2013 Street League World Tour will utilize the viewer-friendly ISX instant-scoring system (co-owned by Dyrdek) and concrete skate plazas built by Joe Ciaglia's California Skateparks.
The dates and venues for the 2013 SLS World Tour are:
Stop One: Street League at X Games – Foz do IguaƧu, Brazil (April 18 - 21)
Stop Two: Street League at X Games – Barcelona, Spain (May 16 - 19)
Stop Three: Sprint Center – Kansas City, Mo. (June 9)
Stop Four: Street league at X Games – Munich, Germany (June 27 - 30)
Stop Five: Rose Garden – Portland, Ore. (July 14)
Stop Six: Street League at X Games – Los Angeles (August 1 - 4)
